As a member of the York University community, I pledge to contribute to a sustainable future by committing to the following principles: 1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: I will rethink my consumptive habits and will strive to reduce my reliance on material goods. I commit to reducing the amount of waste that I generate, and maximizing what I divert through reuse and recycling. 2. Conserve Energy: I will be mindful of my energy consumption by turning off lights and unplugging devices when not in use, and I will advocate for energy-efficient practices wherever possible (for example within my residence, classroom and/or office). 3. Water Conservation: I be conscious of water consumption and preventing introduction of pollutants into our water systems. I commit to acting as a water steward on campus and in the community, to protect and ensure safe water access. 4. Sustainable Transportation: I will choose sustainable modes of transportation whenever possible, such as walking, biking, carpooling, or using public transit, to reduce my carbon footprint. I commit to reducing the carbon footprint of my transportation to and from campus, and within the community. 5. Support Local and Sustainable Choices in Purchasing: I will prioritize purchasing food and products from local and sustainable sources. 6. Protect Biodiversity: I will respect natural habitats, support conservation efforts, and choose more often plant-based options to reduce my ecological impact. 7. Engage in Education and Advocacy: I will educate myself and others about sustainability issues and advocate for policies and practices that promote environmental stewardship within the university and the wider community. 8. Participate in Community Initiatives: I will take part in sustainability initiatives, volunteer opportunities, and events that promote environmental awareness and action at York University. 9. Wellness and Community: I will be attentive, considerate, and compassionate towards my own well-being and the well-being of those around me. I support and advocate for social justice and the commitment to decolonizing, equity, diversity and inclusion (DEDI). 10. Reflect, Improve and Lead by Example: I will regularly reflect on my personal habits and seek ways to improve my sustainability practices, encouraging peers to join me in this commitment.
